I received a wonderful surprise with the mail today! All right, maybe it wasn’t much of a surprise really as I knew it would be coming sometime soon. I got the newest edition of Jane Austen’s Regency World!
I began subscribing to this magazine at Christmas 2007, I got a subscription from my parents then. For those of you who have not heard of this magazine before let me tell you a little about it. It is made and published by the Jane Austen Center, in Bath. And it comes out six times a year.
As is quite easy to guess from the title, it’s all about Jane Austen and her world! Obviously whenever a new film adaptation of any of her books comes out there is always a big feature on that. With pictures, and interviews with some of the actors and such. Then when there are any events going on they very often write about that (it was in this magazine where I first came across the Dancing with Darcy that I wrote about earlier). They also write about other famous people from that time, and events that were taking place then.
There are also a lot of articles about Jane Austen herself, and the reason she did this or didn’t do that. Or what she thought about certain things, like for example a little while ago there was an article called something like “Jane Austen and the French“. Where the person who wrote it expressed her (or his?) impression of what Jane’s opinion of the French were and why. It’s, for me at least, all really interesting!
There is always lots of news as well, from all corners of the Regency world. It’s a great way to keep track of what’s happening and what other Janeites are up to!
I first got a copy of this when we visited the Jane Austen House. But for some reason I wasn’t completely impressed. But I got another one when we visited Bath a couple of years later, and then I loved it! And it was after that I got my first subscription. And now I love them even more! It’s really a highlight every time I find one of the magazines in the mailbox (or like today, on my bed as someone had brought in the mail before I had the chance to)!
You can find out more about it here on the Jane Austen Centers website. And you can also subscribe from there.
Personally I like it very much, and therefor I do recommend it to any Janeite!
