One more…

All right, this is the last of the films I received for my birthday that I have not yet written about (the fourth one was Jerusalem which I’ve already written about before). This one is called The Way We Live Now and is, like The Barchester Chronicles, based on the work of Anthony Trollope.

It is from 2001 and is a five hour long BBC drama in four parts.

The story revolves around the upper-class of society in Victorian England. There is Sir Felix, who is a hopeless card player and spends, not only his own money, but his family’s too. There is his sister, who is a very good girl (and who wears the most stunning dresses!).There is a young engineer and adventurer who is doing all he can to fulfill his vision of building a railway across half the American continent. To name but a few of the characters.
And then of course, there are the “newcomers”. The family Melmotte who have just arrived from Paris and have taken a house in the most fashionable and glamorous part of London. Mr. Melmotte is a business man, a very rich one at that, and what is more, he is a swindler. His only daughter is of course sought after for the sake of her large fortune.

The plot is thick with betrayal and heartache, but all the same, I did not think it was a depressing story. For as well as that there is a lot of love and romance, and funny parts. I was touched by how real all the feelings and emotions seemed. The characters were like real people.

I thoroughly loved it! And I have now come to the conclusion that I definitely have to get hold of a book by Anthony Trollope
!
I am so happy with all the films I got, I have enjoyed them all so much! And I can tell you that for me, this period-drama-watching-season that we have gone through since my birthday, has been truly delightful! My sister and I were talking about it the other day, and one of us asked (I can’t remember who) “are there any of the BBC period dramas that we have seen that we don’t really like?”. And we couldn’t think of any!

Oh, just one more thing. The costumes in this film were gorgeous, I repeat gorgeous! Just look at some of these dresses! It’s funny how fashions can grow on you. I mean, not too long ago I thought this fashion just looked strange, I wasn’t at all too keen on the bustle look. But here I am now, drooling over theses dresses! Just have a look at some of them!

  1. I started watching that recently, as it was on netflix… but for some reason I decided I wasn’t in the mood at the time and went and watched something else… I’ll have to return to it later and see if I like it 🙂

Well, when you feel more in the mood for it I would say you should definitely give it another go! As I said in this post, personally I loved it! So I absolutely think it is worth watching! 🙂
