MY Hornblower on the East India Company ship Götheborg

Tweet If anyone every happens to find themselves in Göteborg one of the things I think you should try to go and see is the beautiful East Indiaman ship the Götheborg. Like many countries back in the 17-18th century Sweden had its own East India Company, sailing back and forth to China bringing home rare and exotic goods from the orient to the people here in the cold north. One of the most famous of these ships was one called Götheborg and, not surprising bearing in mind its name, it was from this city. That ship is obvioulsy no longer around … Continue reading

To my dear sister

Tweet Today I want to write something which really has nothing whatsoever to do with Jane Austen or any of the other subjects I usually write about here. Today I want to write about my sister.  There can be no situation in life in which the conversation of my dear sister will not administer some comfort to me. ~Mary Montagu My sister Viktoria has been my constant friend and companion for 21 years, 7 months and 11 days, in other words since the day I was born. As all sisters do we spent our childhood playing together, and I will … Continue reading

International Jane Austen Book Club

Tweet That is what my sister Viktoria and our friend Dolinde decided to call the bookclub they started last year; International Jane Austen Book Club. I don’t quite remember how the idea got started, but I believe Viktoria and Dolinde had been discussing the books and then started talking about doing a club to get more people into the discussion. I was invited to join (of course, my sister could not very well start a book club about Jane Austen and then not invite me! :P) and we also asked a few other friends to  join in. It was never meant to … Continue reading

I blame it on my great-grandma

Tweet I get obsessed by things. You might have noticed. And my most recent obsession is… corsets. Yes, corsets. I told you about the books I bought a while back (by they way, they were fantastic! Especially the V&A underwear book, I honestly had difficulty in putting the book down, I just wanted to keep reading!) and of my plan to make myself another corset. Well I have. I finished it a couple of days ago and am vastly pleased with it. And I am going to share pictures of that one with you as soon as I figure out … Continue reading

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to….

Tweet ….my SEWING ROOM!!!! That’s right, I have a new sewing room! Or sewing ‘studio’ as I like to call it. Up till this point I have done all of my sewing in a part of the dining room that I have taken over as mine. I had a table with my sewing machines on and then I had the rest of my sewing stuff in other parts of the house; my fabrics in a wardrobe upstairs, other sewing equipment in two different places in the house, ironboard stored away…. So doing something is always a big project. And I … Continue reading

It’s Christmas Time! :)

Tweet “You are all to come to Pemberley at Christmas” so writes Elizabeth in her letter to Mrs Gardiner in the very end of Pride and Prejudice. We are going to have lots of people here for Christmas this year, I have a feeling it’s going to get pretty crowded. Especially as it is now -25 outside (according to the online converter I found, that would be 13 degrees Fahrenheit), so no one will be wanting to spend too much time outdoors. Brrrr….  We are going to be at least 14 people here, possibly 19, depending on whether one family … Continue reading
